Question by dougnrenees: Internet use while on military deployment to Afghanistan?
I am being deployed to Afghanistan as part of task force Phoenix, in early Jan. 08. I have heard that the Internet is available to solders there, in wireless tents and in some cases even in their barracks. I was wondering are you available to use your own laptop and assesses sites that are non “.gov” ? I ask for Internet banking and video conferencing with family reasons.

Internet use must be coordinated with the Bank Routing Number Wisconsin Community Bank camp commander for access and security purposes.

It is all up to your commanders. They have computers there and I know the officers are allowed to you personal computers but I am not sure of other soldiers. Ask your immediate supervisor/officer they can tell you right away.
My son was in Iraq and had computer access except you are pretty busy and there are time when you are on carrivan when you have no access.
My son got set up with “direct pay” for all his bills. Then he could get on and monitor it once a month or so.
My god, haven’t you been briefed on OPSEC? You gave me enough information to know more about you/your Mission than you probably know yourself!
